Glass Staff D&D Character Journal - 7/10

  • These Journals are quite nice, and I have used one for the better part of a year in a Dragonlance campaign. Definitely one I recommend, but I still only give it a 7/10 due to limited writing space. I would say it is worth the money if you are a person who does a good job memorizing your abilities and doesn’t need to look things up very often. If you like to have everything written down, this might not be the pick for you.

  • 9/10 - Aesthetics and Feel - This Journal feels good to use, and it’s made from PU leather and has a great design that can come in many colors.

6/10 - Space - There is not a lot of space for you to write down all your character features, like racial traits, class abilities, etc.. This makes you have to use spaces not meant for that to writer everything down, and it can get a bit frustrating to locate a certain ability.

8/10 - Durability - This journal survived a years worth of rough treatment, being shoved into bags on the way to a session and sitting unattended in my office space for long periods of time. Very little wear has appeared in that time, and the gold design on the front the leatherette cover and binding have no visible signs of damage. Would recommend if you’re looking for something hardy. The only thing worth noting is that the pages are not as strong as the other journals’ pages, and I would recommend getting clear sticky notes to put over your Hit Points section.

First Reign D&D Character Journal - 7/10

  • This character journal is the best looking of the journals I have reviewed and used, with brownish pages and an embossed cover. It has more space than the Glass Staff Journal for abilities, features, and traits, and it’s pages are better all around. Costing around $25.99 on amazon, this journal is worth the money if you’re looking for something solid for a 1st to 10th level campaign. I do not expect it will stay in good condition for multiple campaigns.

  • 9/10 - Aesthetics & Feel - This journal feels nice and has a strong spine, though it doesn’t feel as much like a journal as the Glass staff D&D Character Journal. This is mostly subjective, but if you like the feel of a real journal for immersion purposes, the Glass Staff journal outshines this, but if you like the feeling of having a solid magical tome in your hands, this product would be a better choice for you.

8/10 - Space - Plenty of space can be found in the journal to organize yourself, but the pages are spread out a bit more, and not everything is as convenient as the Glass Staff D&D Journal or the Dandy Character Journal. You will have to do plenty of page flipping to find everything, but everything CAN fit, whereas the Glass staff Journal is inconvenient past around 5th - 8th levels due to it’s limited space for detailed notes about your character abilities.

6/10 - Durability - The journal shows signs of warping as early as arrival, which was a complaint about them in its amazon reviews. It doesn’t hinder the use of the journal, but I can already feel that this journal could not be used for a very long time. Made to be flashier, durability takes a hit.

  • The Dandy Beyond D&D Journal is a good, solid purchase. A ton of space available compared to the First Reign and the Glass Staff journals, solid hardcover or paperback options, and costs less than the other two reviewed options. I would say this is worth the $9.95(paperback) and $18.99(hardcover) prices.

  • 7/10 - Aesthetics & Feel - While the journal feels smooth in hardcover and light to the touch, it doesn’t compare in design of the character sheets or cover design when put next to the Glass Staff Journal and the First Reign Journal. That being said, if you like a larger book and don’t care that much about aesthetics, then this is a great cheaper option when compared to the others.

10/10 - Space - This book stands out beyond the others due to it’s ample writing space and larger size. Plenty of space to write down all features and traits well into higher levels, and is much simpler and feels less cramped than the others do.

8/10 - Durability - While this journal is still relatively new, I did use it for a number of levels before I switched the First Reign journal, and it’s spine is strong, not easily warped, and it’s slender size makes it extremely convenient to use and store, and can sit in a bookshelf withg other books or in a backpack for weeks without taking any real damage. It does not seem vulnerable to warping quite as much as the First Reign journal, and is not as soft as the Glass Staff Journal, so I place it higher up on the Durability scale.
